A Woman of Noble Character: Proverbs 31

Standard

I have often thought about the “modern day” woman of our culture and looked for what type of character is praised in our society.  I have stumbled upon many varieties but it has left me disappointed.  There is a common theme that I see as characteristics our society embraces for women to have.  A strict ideal for beauty; thin, tan, toned, “Perfect” flawless skin, personalities ranging from self-absorbed to self-proclaiming, or in your face.  I have noticed that mothers who choose to stay at home are not valued and those who have to work are portrayed as selfish.  Society never can have “Grey” area.  It is always all or nothing with no balance.

Is it just me or am I the only one bothered by this?  As women we all come in different shapes, sizes, life circumstances, and backgrounds.  None of them are better than the other we are all equal!  So, I want to see what God said about it.  I looked to Proverbs which has been a life line to me.  In Proverbs 31, it is describing a “Wife of Noble Character” but what I have noticed is God is describing a “Woman of Noble Character.”

An Entreprenuar- Proverbs 31:16 “She goes out to inspect a field and buys it; with her earnings she plants a vineyard.”

Has Work Ethic- Proverbs 31:17-18 “She is energetic and strong, a hard worker.  She watches for bargains; her lights burn late into the night.”

Is Charitable- Proverbs 31:20 “She extends a helping hand to the poor and opens her arms to the needy.”

Has Strength & No Fear- Proverbs 31:25 “She is clothed with strength & dignity, and she laughs with no fear of the future.”

Is Wise & Slow to Speak- Proverbs 31:26 “When she speaks, her words are wise, and kindness is the rule when she gives instructions.”

Values & Leads Her Family- Proverbs 31:28 “Her children stand and bless her.  Her husband praises her.”

Puts God First- Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last, but a woman who fears the LORD will be greatly praised.”

So what is my point you ask?  My point is that even though society puts us in a box, God doesn’t.  We all have the potential to be all of these things!  Did you also notice that all the traits of women that God talks about, none of them focused on outward looks?

The most important things aren’t on the outside.  Importance and beauty lies within.

YOU ARE WONDERFULLY MADE!
